Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJangjeon Village in Janghwa-ri, Changpyeong-myeon, is a clan settlement of the Jeonju Yi clan, whose members here are commonly known as the "Jangjeon Yi clan." Reflecting its historical and local character as part of Changpyeong, the house was named the Changpyeong Jangjeon Yi Clan Historic House; it is the head house of Yi Hyeong-jeong (李衡井, 1682–1752), who settled in Jangjeon. The main hall (anchae) is a large hip-and-gable tiled-roof building, six bays wide and one bay deep with a front and rear extended bay (toetmaru); it stands on a fairly high foundation of rough fieldstones about 1.5 m tall, with roughly set foundation stones and round pillars (wonju). Its timber frame follows the typical form with two tall interior columns and five purlins, and the rooms are arranged in sequence as a one-bay kitchen, two one-bay rooms, a two-bay daecheong (wooden-floored hall), and a one-bay room. The sarangchae (men's quarters), which has a hip-and-gable roof and a square pond in its front yard, is five bays wide and one bay deep with a front and rear extended bay; it stands on a high foundation of rough fieldstones, with roughly trimmed foundation stones and square pillars. Its frame has one tall central column, three short columns and five purlins, and an inscription on the ridge purlin reading "上之十二年乙亥" shows that it dates to 1875, the twelfth year of Emperor Gojong. Passing through the middle gate, a one-bay grain chest (dwiju) with four sides stands as an independent structure in the middle of the courtyard, used for storing grain. This building, now more than 130 years old, is a typical wealthy-farmer-style yangban house of the southern region. It is well equipped with all the components a yangban house should have — the gatehouse, sarangchae, middle gatehouse, anchae and storehouse — and its structural form is excellent. There is a square pond in the sarang yard, and as the birthplace of Dr Yi Seung-gi (1905–1996), the house also holds significance in modern history.
