The house is said to have been built in 1788, the twelfth year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, by Choe Gwang-ik (pen name Nongsujae, 1731–1795) for his second son, Choe Seung-u (1770–1841), but it was later exchanged with Choe Seung-u's elder brother, Choe Seong-u (1762–1802). The name Bugae ("northern hillside") comes from the fact that, viewed from the Ssangam Historic House in Gumi (a National Folklore Heritage) on the opposite side, this house appears to stand on a hill to the north. A straight-line sarangchae and middle gatehouse, together with a U-shaped anchae, are arranged facing south, in the same layout as the Ssangam Historic House. A main gatehouse and a shrine are said to have originally stood here as well, but they no longer survive. The sarangchae is four bays wide and two bays deep, with a two-bay sarang room on the west side, and on the east side a daecheong (wooden-floored hall) with a floored room behind it. The middle gatehouse is a straight-line building seven bays wide and one bay deep; from the right it has a shed, a storeroom, a wooden floor, and another storehouse, with the middle gate at the far left. The anchae, facing the middle gatehouse, has a six-bay daecheong at its centre, a small side room to the north-east, and the main bedroom with a two-bay kitchen in front. Above the kitchen is a loft accessible from the main bedroom, floored with wooden boards. To the south-west of the daecheong is a three-bay upper room, and to its east, in front, a two-bay inner sarang room and a one-bay wooden-floored room. The wooden floor is open to the south at the front, while walls were built facing the inner courtyard and the middle gatehouse — a notable feature designed to block sightlines toward the inner courtyard.
