This is the former home of Jo Deok-rin (1658–1737), pen name Okcheon, of the Hanyang Jo clan. Comprising a jeongchim (the main residential hall), a chodang (a detached study pavilion), and a sadang (an ancestral shrine), it is a representative example of a late-seventeenth-century yangban residence. The residential hall has the square, ㅁ-shaped plan found mainly in houses of the Andong region. The front, five bays wide, has the main gate at its centre and an an-sarangbang (inner men's room) to the left; to the right is an ondol room converted from a former stable, together with a kitchen and a storeroom. The main block of the residential hall stands higher than the wings that turn off to either side, and at the front is a six-bay daecheong (wooden-floored hall) open to the inner courtyard. Adjoining the daecheong from the right are a dojangbang (storage room) and the anbang (women's main room), the anbang having been extended by one further bay towards the floor to make it two bays wide. Among the ㅁ-shaped houses of North Gyeongsang Province, it is not unusual for a dojangbang to stand at the head of the daecheong and anbang, but it is unusual, as here, for its floor to be laid with wooden flooring rather than heated ondol. The chodang was built in 1695, the twenty-first year of King Sukjong of Joseon, as a place for teaching children to read and write, or for elderly family members to stay. The sadang follows the typical plan of this area, with a somewhat wider central bay, and was built in 1790, the fourteenth year of King Jeongjo; it stands to the rear, on the right of the anchae, enclosed by a wall. The residential hall follows the typical plan of the Andong region, but differs in that the anbang is placed to the east and the sarangbang to the west; from the eighteenth century this form became standardised, with the anbang and kitchen placed to the west.
