This was the home of Yi Seok-mun, a military officer who guarded Crown Prince Sado; after the crown prince's death, Yi Seok-mun, missing him, set the gate facing north in 1774, the fiftieth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, and lived in seclusion here for the rest of his life. In 1821, the twenty-first year of King Sunjo, his grandson Yi Gyu-jin rebuilt the anchae and sarangchae, and the sarangchae was rebuilt again in 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong, in the form that survives today. Originally the house also included a woodblock-storage hall, an inner gate building, a stable, and a lower wing in addition to the anchae and sarangchae, but these no longer survive. The sarangchae and anchae together form a square layout, and a raised-roof gate survives, showing the characteristics typical of a high official's house of the period. As a building with relatively reliable construction dates, the house is valuable material for research into the history of Korean traditional housing.
