A jeongnyeogak is a memorial gate that the state erected at the entrance to a village or in front of a house to honour, and hold up as a model, a loyal subject, a filial child, or a virtuous woman. This gate commemorates the chastity of Lady Kim of the Uiseong Kim clan, wife of Yu Seong of the Jeonju Yu clan. Lady Kim was the daughter of Kim Jin, pen name Cheonggye, and the younger sister of Kim Seong-il, pen name Hakbong. At the age of 24, when her husband died, she cut off her own hair, kept watch over his grave for three years, and then ended her life by fasting. The royal court later held her virtuous conduct in high regard and ordered a memorial stele to be erected. The gate was built in 1635, the thirteenth year of King Injo of Joseon, and was relocated to its present site in 1988 because of the construction of Imha Dam.
