Uiseonggimssiunam Hermitage Head House
의성김씨운암종택 · 義城金氏雲岩宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of Kim Myeong-il, pen name Unam (1534-1570), third son of Kim Jin, pen name Cheonggye. Inscriptions on the building suggest it was built in 1754, the thirtieth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon. It consists of an anchae (main house) and a sarangchae (men's quarters) joined to one another. The anchae is six bays across the front and six bays deep, with a square (ㅁ-shaped) floor plan. Its roof, seen from the side, is a matbae (gable) roof shaped like the character 人; around the central daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, an upper room and the inner room are arranged to the left. On the right, where a geonneonbang, a room across the hall, would normally stand, a wooden floor and a storage room were built instead, a rare arrangement. The sarangchae is three bays across the front and two and a half bays deep, fitted out with rooms and a wooden floor, with a railing around its narrow veranda. Its roof, seen from the side, is a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof shaped like the character 八. The anchae departs from the traditional mould, favouring a floor plan that emphasises practicality, which makes it valuable material for comparing and studying traditional houses and ways of life in this region.
