Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBanghojeong Pavilion was built in 1619, the eleventh year of King Gwanghaegun, by Jo Jun-do, pen name Bangho. It is said that, at the age of 44, Bangho felt such longing for his deceased mother that he built the pavilion on this spot, which commands a view of the grave of his birth mother of the Andong Kwon clan. At first the pavilion was named "Sachin" (Longing for One's Parent) or Pungsudang, both names reflecting thoughts of his mother. Later, in 1827, the twenty-seventh year of King Sunjo, a four-bay Bangdae Lecture Hall was added. It is said that Yi Jun, pen name Changseok, Jo Hyeong-do, pen name Donggye, Kwon Ik, pen name Pungae, Jo Jun-do, pen name Bangho, and Sin Jeup, pen name Haeum, among other scholars, gathered here to discuss learning and enjoy the scenery. Built atop a cliff above the river, Banghojeong has an L-shaped (ㄱ-shaped) plan: the central section carries a gable roof whose side profile resembles the character 人, while the angled section carries a hipped-and-gabled roof whose side profile resembles the character 八. Printing blocks for the collected works of Bangho are kept inside the pavilion, along with many commemorative poem boards inscribed by various sages.
