Gyeong Am-heon Historic House
경암헌고택 · 경菴軒故宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building is a typical house of the Yeongnam region, in which a ㄷ-shaped main house (anchae) and a straight, ㅡ-shaped men's quarters (sarangchae) together form an overall ㅁ-shaped (square) floor plan. It was originally the head house (jongtaek) of the Yeongyang Nam clan, built by Nam Gu-su, who held the jinsa degree (a successful candidate in the lower level of the Joseon civil service examination). However, the grandfather of Kim Jong-geol (pen name Hwangpa), an ancestor of the present owner some ten generations back, inherited the building from his father-in-law, and it has since been passed down as the head house of the Uiseong Kim clan residing in Geochon-ri. The sarangchae, which bears a plaque reading 'Gyeongamheon', is a single-eaved, hip-and-gable-roofed building of three bays across the front and two bays deep. It is a mindori-jip (a simple house type built without decorative bracket sets), with square columns set on natural stone foundation stones atop a stone-built platform; it has a retreat-floor veranda (toenmaru) at the front, and heated ondol rooms and a wooden-floored hall on either side at the rear. Notably, the spacing of the central columns was made narrower than that of the columns on either side, and a plaque reading 'Nueunjae' was also hung there — an arrangement rarely seen in other buildings.
