This pavilion was built around 1650, the first year of King Hyojong's reign, by Hwangpa Kim Jong-geol, a civil official of the Joseon dynasty. It is said to have been built for the gatherings, discussions and refined leisure of the Confucian scholars of that era. It has a front of three bays and a side of two bays, with a paljak (hip-and-gable) roof whose sides resemble the shape of the character 八 ("eight"). The building is simply finished, with a wooden floor in the central bay and ondol (underfloor-heated) rooms on either side, and a balustrade set around the raised wooden floor (numaru). The pavilion's pond, artificial island, large rocks and old pine trees form a setting that blends beautifully with the building, offering a glimpse into the refined taste of the yangban scholar-officials of the time.
