This was the residence of Yi Yeong, a seventh-generation descendant of the Yean Yi clan, who came down to this area from Seoul to escape the turmoil of the Gimyo Literati Purge, which broke out under King Jungjong of Joseon. The house is said to have been built around 1525, the 20th year of King Jungjong; it served as the main house of the Yean Yi clan living in Andong, until the present owner bought it in 1925 and repaired the sarangchae, the men's quarters. It is a six-bay-front, five-bay-side ㅁ-shaped (square, courtyard) house that, though modest in scale, well preserves the typical form of a middle-to-upper-class Joseon residence of this region. At the centre of the front is an inner gate, with a sarangbang (men's room) and a sarang-maru (men's wooden-floored porch) to its right. The anchae, the main quarters, to the rear has a daecheong, a wooden-floored hall, at its centre, flanked by the sangbang (upper room) and anbang (main room). The columns in front of the anchae's daecheong are square posts, made thicker at the base than at the top for added strength.
