Sa U-jeong Historic House in Odeok-ri, Pohang
포항 오덕리 사우정 고택 · 浦項 吾德里 四友亭 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSa U-jeong is said to have been built by Jeong Eon-gak, grandfather of Jeong Mun-bu (pen name Nongpo, 1565–1624), who achieved great military merit during the Japanese invasions of 1592, while Jeong Eon-gak was serving as magistrate of Cheongsong. The place was then called Songeulgok, and because there was a rumour during the invasions that Japanese troops would be defeated at place names containing the character 松 (song, meaning pine), it was chosen as a refuge. After the war ended, as Jeong Mun-bu returned to his hometown of Jinju, he gave this house to his granddaughter's husband, Yi Gang, and it has been handed down ever since. A later descendant, Yi Heon-sun, is said to have renamed the house Sa U-jeong after his own pen name. It has a single-row (il-shaped) sarangchae, the men's reception quarters, and a square (mieum-shaped) anchae, the women's quarters, with the site of a former shrine at the right-hand corner of the anchae. It is valuable evidence of the way of life of a scholar-official family in the mid-Joseon period.
