This shrine was built to honour the loyalty of Hosu Jeong Se-a (1535–1612), a leader of the righteous army (uibyeong, volunteer militia) from Yeongcheon during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98, and his son Baegam Jeong Ui-beon (1560–1592). In the first year of King Jeongjo (1777), Chunghyeonsa Shrine was built behind the study hall for ancestral rites and used as a place of lectures and study. Afterwards, Chunghyogak Pavilion was built to the left of the shrine. In the fifth year of Emperor Gojong (1868), it was torn down under Regent Daewongun's order abolishing private Confucian academies (seowon), and today only Chunghyogak and two annex buildings remain.
