Seok Gye Historic House
석계고택 · 石溪古宅

This is the former residence of Yi Si-myeong (1590–1674), pen name Seokgye, a scholar active during the reigns of King Injo and King Hyeonjong of Joseon. In 1640, the 18th year of King Injo, he built a house above Seokgye (a mountain stream) and took Seokgye as his pen name. The house was shared by Yi Si-myeong and his wife, Lady Jang, who held the honorific title of Jeongbuin; Yi Si-myeong died in Andong, but Lady Jang lived in this house until her own death. The single-row (il-shaped) sarangchae (men's quarters) and anchae (women's quarters) are linked by an earthen wall that closes the gap between them, giving the whole the feel of an enclosed courtyard house. In the sarangchae, a sarangbang (men's room) and sarangmaru (wooden-floored hall) are arranged around the main gate, with a stable and a storeroom to the left.
