Chunguidang Hall
충의당 · 忠義堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the sarangchae (men's quarters) of the house where Choe Jin (1568–1636), posthumously honoured as Jeongmugong, once lived. The building was first named Heumheumdang, but after repairs around 1760 it was renamed Chunguidang. It has a four-kan front and a two-kan side, topped with a hipped-and-gabled paljak roof, so called because its sides form the shape of the Chinese character for eight (八). The house is arranged with Chunguidang at the front as its centre, while the jeongchim (main quarters), a storage wing and Heumheumdang stand behind it, together forming a quadrangular, courtyard-style layout. To the right lies a space set aside for ancestral rites, giving the house the typical arrangement of an upper-class Joseon residence. Nearby stands a pavilion housing a memorial stele raised in Choe Jin's honour, and he is enshrined at Yongsan Seowon.
