Buncheollidotomarijip
분천리도토마리집 · 汾川里도토마리집

This dotomarijip, a traditional house whose name comes from its resemblance to the dotomari, the warp beam of a weaving loom, stands in Suan-gol, Buncheon-ri, and was built around 100 years ago. A dotomarijip has a kitchen at the centre and a single-bay room at each end, a layout said to look like the dotomari of a loom, which gave the house its name. Together with the kkachigumeongjip, a 'magpie-hole house' whose roof has a vent for smoke and light, it is a dwelling type peculiar to the Andong region. Notably, the interior widens towards the north, and a narrow wooden floor is set behind the bongdang, the earthen-floored hall that serves as an entrance, showing a close relationship to the kkachigumeongjip type. The house measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side. The area in front of the bongdang and the cattle shed is built of plank walls, while the rest is mud wall reinforced with wooden rods. Particularly distinctive are the joinery that fixes the plank door frames at the front and back of the bongdang without using iron nails, and the threshold fitted with a wooden lattice screen to keep animals out. It is important material illustrating a distinctive form of dwelling found in this region.
