Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are artefacts relating to Donghak preserved at Sangju Dong School Hall, totalling 1,084 items in 177 categories. Donghak was a religion founded in 1860, the eleventh year of King Cheoljong of Joseon, by Choe Je-u. It began as a simple faith widely spread among the common people, but later became the driving force of a social reform movement, leaving a major mark on the history of Korea's national movements. Through the second patriarch, Choe Si-hyeong, and on to the third, Son Byeong-hui, internal conflict deepened, splitting the religion into some thirty sects, each of which set up its own independent hall. Sangju Dong School Hall was established in 1922 through the efforts of Kim Nak-se and his son, and after vigorous activity including large-scale publishing projects, its influence spread, centred on Sangju, Mungyeong and Andong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, as far as Chungcheong-do and Gangwon-do. The artefacts held at the hall comprise 131 items of books and documents, including Donghak scriptures; 792 printing woodblocks engraved with Donghak scriptures and devotional songs; 31 items of clothing; and 130 further items such as religious flags and seals. They are the only material able to clarify the status and character of Sangju Dong School Hall within Donghak, and they also contribute to research on Donghak.
