Facing southwest with a mountain behind it and broad fields before it, this house is the head house of the Yuiljae branch of the Gwangsan Kim clan, built in the late 1700s. Kim Eon-gi, whose pen name was Yuiljae (1520-1588), was a civil official under King Seonjo who devoted great effort to education in the Andong region. The house consists of a square (mihyeong, Korean letter ㅁ-shaped) main hall, jeongchim, and a family shrine, the shrine standing on a slightly raised hill behind and to the left of the main hall. Passing through the middle gate, the women's quarters (anchae) lie directly ahead, with the men's quarters (sarangchae) and servants' quarters (haengnangchae) enclosing the inner courtyard on either side in an enclosed layout. The design of the windows and doors and the handling of the timber follow old methods, and in its layout and floor plan this old house well illustrates the architectural style of the late Joseon period.
