Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis old house, standing in Sudo-ri, is thought to have been built in the early 19th century. It has been home to generations of the Seonseong Kim clan, though its detailed history is unknown. The women's quarters, anchae, was originally a thatched-roof kkachigumeong-jip, a 'magpie-hole house' built with a hole in the roof to let out the smoke generated inside and let in light, while the men's quarters, sarangchae, was tiled; around 1975 the thatched roof of the anchae was replaced with tiles. The anchae is arranged around the bongdang, an earthen-floored entrance area, with a wooden-floored hall behind it, a men's room (sarangbang) to the left and a kitchen to the right. On either side of the wooden hall are a dojangbang (storage room) and the main bedroom (anbang). The sarangchae measures five bays across the front and one and a half bays to the side, with a paljak roof whose side profile resembles the Chinese character 八 (eight). From the left there are a stable and a kitchen, with the three bays to the right serving as the sarangbang. In front of the sarangbang is a half-bay-wide veranda (toenmaru), and on the right side there is a small attached porch (jjokmaru). Although the exterior has changed due to later repairs, the interior retains its original form relatively well, making this a valuable old house.
