Sansujeong Pavilion was built by Hobong Yi Don (1568–1624) after he left government office and returned to his hometown, so that he could devote himself to scholarship and the training of younger students. The exact date of construction is not known, but it is said to have been built around 1610, the second year of King Gwanghaegun's reign, and an inscription inside the building shows that Dongya Kim Yang-geun (1734–1799) later restored it after it had fallen into disrepair. The building measures three kan across the front and two kan to the side, with a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof whose sides form the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八). On either side of a central daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) are ondol (heated-floor) rooms, and a narrow wooden veranda with railings runs along both ends and the front. Although the building shows no especially distinctive structural features, it is of considerable value as a fine example of Joseon-period pavilion architecture.
