Gokgang River Historic House is said to have been built by Gwon Eung-ju, a descendant of Obong Gwon Chaek, when he set up a separate household, and to have been renovated in the 1700s. The house comprises three main parts: the main hall, a shrine, and Gokgangjeong Pavilion. The shrine stands behind and to the right of the main hall, while Gokgangjeong Pavilion stands to the front left. The main hall has a four-kan daecheong (open wooden-floored hall) at the front, flanked by ondol (heated-floor) rooms. On the left, a storeroom, main room and kitchen connect to the left wing, while on the right a bridal room said to have been used by married-out daughters, together with a wooden floor, connects to the right wing. In the men's quarters section, a wooden-floored room is set to the right of the central sarang room. The shrine measures one kan to the front and one kan to the side but is rectangular in plan, and no separate wall was built to enclose it. Gokgangjeong Pavilion measures three kan across the front and two-and-a-half kan to the side, with an eaves bay at the front; it follows a floor plan often used for pavilions or jeongsa (study halls), with a central two-kan wooden floor flanked by ondol rooms spanning two kan each. Overall, the building is well equipped with the square (mija-shaped) layout and features often seen in the houses of the yangban gentry of the northern Gyeongsang region, and is valued as a building that shows distinctive qualities in its construction technique.
