Seongju Daesallijinsadaek House
성주대산리진사댁 · 星州大山里進士宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe village of Hangae in Daesan-ri is a clan village of the Seongsan Yi lineage, and Jinsadaek was built by Yi Guk-hui (1868–1939). The house takes its name from the fact that Yi Guk-hui passed the sogwa, the last minor state examination held under the Joseon Dynasty, and so became a jinsa, a licentiate degree holder — but as he never took up government office, the name marks that distinction rather than any career. The house consists of an anchae (women's quarters), sarangchae (men's quarters) and gobangchae (storage wing). Entering through the sarang courtyard, one finds the sarangchae, behind which the anchae stands alongside the saesarangchae (new men's quarters). The sarangchae has a narrow veranda across its three front bays, with a one-bay wooden-floored room to the rear left and two ondol (heated) rooms to the rear right. In the anchae, five of the seven front bays have a veranda, and behind them, centred on a two-bay main wooden-floored hall, there are two ondol rooms to the left and a one-bay geonneonbang (room across the hall) to the right. Beneath the veranda in front of the geonneonbang a cooking hearth is set, and above the room beside the main bedroom there is a loft. The saesarangchae consists of a railed, one-bay floor room made to resemble a raised pavilion floor, together with a one-bay ondol room and a storeroom. The door from the pavilion floor into the room is decorated with a swastika (man-ja) motif, an auspicious Buddhist symbol, giving it a rare, delicate and beautiful finish. The house is a fine example illustrating the diversity of housing styles found in Hangae Village.
