Andong Jesan Head House
안동제산종택 · 安東霽山宗宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the residence built and lived in from the early 18th century by the late-Joseon scholar Jesan Kim Seong-tak (金聖鐸, 1684–1747); Ugok-chodang, to the right of the head house, was built by him in 1718 as a place to train younger scholars. Kim Seong-tak was a civil official and accomplished writer of the late Joseon period with deep learning in Neo-Confucianism, and in 1728 (the fourth year of King Yeongjo), during Yi In-jwa's Rebellion, he raised a righteous army and wrote proclamations that helped suppress the revolt. Judging from an inscription (嘉慶 18, 1814) carved on a roof tile of the main house and from the building's architectural style, the head house is thought to have been rebuilt in 1814 and to have continued in that form to the present. The front-most wing forms a □-shaped plan, its two ends projecting about half a kan beyond the left and right sides of the main house. Ugok-chodang is a single-eaved, gable-roofed building three kan wide across the front and one-and-a-half kan deep. Both the head house and Ugok-chodang, including the detailed features that allow their construction date to be gauged, have preserved their structural style and floor plan with little change since they were built in the 19th century.
