Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the head house of Dongam Yi Yeong-do (李詠道, 1559–1637), a grandson of Toegye Yi Hwang, and of his son Sujoldang Yi Gi (李岐, 1591–1654); the jaesa, a building where rites are performed at an ancestor's grave, is where memorial rites are held for Dongam Yi Yeong-do. Yi Yeong-do is said to have been so intelligent and broad-minded that he was praised as a worthy descendant of Toegye. The exact construction dates of Sujoldang and the jaesa are not known, but Sujoldang is said to have been built in the 17th century, when Yi Yeong-do set up a separate household, and the jaesa in the 18th century, after his death. Sujoldang consists of a □-shaped residence, a one-line (一-shaped) pavilion to its right, and a shrine behind the building. The jaesa stands to the right of Sujoldang and is a □-shaped, double-row house three kan wide across the front and two kan deep. The jaesa preserves its old form well, with no change to the floor plan and structural style it had when first built.
