This building comprises the head house and pavilion of Ganjae Byeon Jung-il (邊中一, 1575–1660), a scholar of the mid-Joseon period. The date the head house was built is not known, but since the brothers Byeon Hui-ye and Byeon Hui-ri settled in Geumgye immediately after the Muo Literati Purge of 1498, it is presumed to date from some time after that. The head house and pavilion are built chiefly in the architectural style of the period around the 19th century and well display the dignity and scale befitting a head family. In particular, the main quarters, detached quarters, shrine and pavilion are arranged down a mountain valley, each adapting to the natural terrain and sited where best suited to its function — a rare example of a scholar-official household's spatial layout preserved intact. Byeon Jung-il was filial from an early age, and during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 he served under Gwak Jae-u, devoting himself to overcoming the national crisis. In recognition of this, in 1686 (the twelfth year of King Sukjong) the state specially bestowed on him a Jeongchunghyogak (旌忠孝閣), a commemorative shrine honouring loyalty and filial piety. For one person to receive such commendation for both loyalty and filial piety together is a very exceptional case.
