Seongju Daesallidodongdaek House was built (presumed around 1850) as a residence by Yi Gi-sang (pen name Minwa, 1829–1903), the second son of Yi Won-jo (pen name Eungwa), who served as Minister of Works under King Cheoljong of Joseon. Entering through the gate on the right, one finds the sarangchae, or men's quarters, facing south across a broad courtyard, with the anchae, or women's quarters, placed to its left. Passing through the middle gate wing in front of the anchae, the anchae itself faces south across an inner courtyard, with a storage wing to the left, giving the whole compound an open square (teun-mija) plan — a mija, or ㅁ-shaped, layout with one side left open. Yi Gi-sang (1829–1903), who first built the house, used the courtesy name Chicheon and the pen name Minwa. He studied under his elder cousin Yi Jin-sang (pen name Hanju), and after coming first in the saengwon examination he served as Inui of the Tongnyewon, a protocol office of the Board of Rites. He was known for his warm, generous character and humility towards others, and for making frugality a family precept. Given the overall layout of Hangae Village, Dodongdaek occupies a very important position, and its open square plan clearly illustrates the regional character of the village's housing.
