Gumigeumgangsageumnangasa Temple
구미금강사금란가사 · 龜尾金剛寺金란袈裟

Geumnangasa, a gold-brocade kasaya (a Buddhist monk's ceremonial robe), takes its origin from the time of the Buddha Shakyamuni, when his aunt Lady Mahapajapati made and offered him a robe of golden cloth, called geumsaeui (golden robe) or geumnangasa. From that time on, the geumnangasa, or golden robe, was a ceremonial vestment worn, at major state-sponsored ceremonies, only by the single foremost monk of the age, serving as jeungmyeongbeopsa, the witness monk who certifies the rite. The geumnangasa of the late Seon Master Cheorwu, founder of Geumgangsa Temple, is believed to have been passed down to him from his teacher Seon Master Hyewol, who in turn received it from his own teacher, the eminent monk of the age, Seon Master Gyeongheo. In the spring of 1898 Gyeongheo was invited to serve as head monk (joshil) of Haeinsa Temple on Gayasan Mountain, and in the autumn of that year, while residing there, he served by royal command as the witness monk certifying the Buddhist ceremony held for the publication of the Buddhist canon. It is presumed that it was at this time that the queen and the court ladies of the royal household made and presented this robe to Gyeongheo as the certifying monk.
