Jukeon Hall Historic House, Andong
안동 죽헌고택 · 安東 竹軒古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built in 1886, the 23rd year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon, by Dongnong Kim Ga-jin (1846–1922), a civil official of late Joseon and an independence activist. In 1890, the 27th year of Gojong's reign, it was acquired by Jukeon Yi Hyeon-chan and has since been used as a house for ancestral rites. The house as a whole has a square (ㅁ-shaped) floor plan, measuring five bays across the front and five bays deep. The roof of the main hall is a gable (matbae) roof, forming the shape of the character 人 (meaning "person") when viewed from the side. The wall enclosing the building is built unusually high with stone, isolating the interior to prevent intrusion from outside. The house displays the typical features of a late Joseon square-plan dwelling.
