Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the old house of Biangong Kim Sam-geun (1419–1465), a civil official during the reign of King Sejong of Joseon. The family is thought to have moved to this house and built it around the time his second son, Gye-haeng (1430–1517), was born. Kim Sam-geun's eldest grandson, the monk Hakjo, was born in this house; he was a senior Buddhist monk during the reign of Yeonsangun who revived Buddhism, including publishing the Buddhist canon, and contributed to the development of culture. Kim Sam-geun's second grandson, Yeong-jeon, was also born here; during the reign of King Seongjong he received a nokgwon, a certificate awarding merit-subject status, and held posts including magistrate of Hapcheon and inspector in the Office of the Inspector-General. A plaque reading "Donsodang" (敦素堂) hangs in this building, a name taken from the pen name of Eon-haeng, Yeong-jeon's ninth-generation descendant.
