Uiam Hermitage Historic House, Sangju
상주 의암고택 · 尙州 依巖古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krUiam Hermitage Historic House stands in the heart of Ungok village and was built by a member of the Yeonan Yi clan known by the pen name Moimdang. Its name, Uiam, comes from the pen name of Jo Beom-gu; later generations named the house this way in tribute to his reputation for virtue. In front of the gate stands a large rock shaped like a tanggeon, the horsehair cap traditionally worn beneath a gat, known as Tanggeonseok; people have also customarily called this rock 'Uiam'. Built in the late Joseon period, the house fully retains the elements of a scholar-gentry residence of the Joseon era: a jeongchim (main hall), a sarangchae (men's quarters), an an-sarangchae (inner men's quarters), a gobangchae (storage wing), a gatehouse, a shrine, a grain-store wing and a soy-jar terrace. It was designated a Cultural Heritage Material in 1986, and on 22 October 2012 it was elevated, by Gyeongsangbuk-do notice, to Gyeongsangbuk-do Folk Heritage status under the name 'Uiamgotaek, Sangju'. Ungok village also contains, besides Uiam Hermitage Historic House, a scatter of remains from a time when the yangban gentry and commoners lived side by side: the pavilions Cheongganjeong, Songdongjae, Gyeongmojae and Mansongjae; old houses such as Yusindang, Yanggyodang and Gyeongsindang; and communal wells, rough stone walls, thatched cottages and a village shrine.
