This is one of the yangban (scholar-official class) houses of the Mungyeong region, the head house of the Jangsu Hwang clan. Based on a record that Hwang Si-gan, an 11th-generation ancestor of the Jangsu Hwang clan, resided in this house at the age of thirty-five, its construction is presumed to date to around the 16th century. Composed of a sarangchae (men's quarters), anchae (women's quarters) and daemunchae (gate house), the house retains its original form relatively well, and certain distinctive features survive in the layout of the anchae, giving it great value as material for research into the folk houses of this region.
