Hwajijae is a jaesil, a ritual hall built to look after ancestral rites, raised to guard the grave of Nam Gye-jo, the founding ancestor of the Yeongyang Nam clan in the Cheongsong region. The site is regarded as a myeongdang, an auspicious geomantic location, and the hall, its stele and a Chinese juniper designated as a natural monument are all neatly arranged here. It is said to have been built around 1670, though this is not certain, and although no trace of a seventeenth-century style survives, the hall has a distinctive roof form. It is a representative jaesil building of this region and holds folkloric value.
