청도 삼족대 · 淸道 三足臺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIn 1519, the 14th year of King Jungjong of Joseon, the Gimyo Purge of literati officials took place, and Kim Dae-yu gave up his official post and retired to this place, building this structure to teach younger students. It was named Samjokdae after Kim Dae-yu's pen name, and was where he held discussions with Ju Se-bung, Jo Sik, Bak Ha-dam and others. It measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a paljak, or hip-and-gable, roof that from the side takes the shape of the character for eight, 八. Earthen walls were built around all four sides with a gate, and the pavilion was set within this enclosure; two rooms, a kitchen, a well and a wooden-floored hall were arranged in an L, or ㄱ, shape. Below Samjokdae stand Kim Dae-yu's sindobi, a memorial stele recording his life erected near his tomb, and a record of its repair written by Kim Yong-hui, a chambong, a minor government post.
