Unnam Historic House, Cheongdo
청도 운남고택 · 淸道 雲南故宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house was built in the late Joseon period when Bak Jae-chung (1850–1869), son of Bak Si-muk, known by his pen name Ungang, set up a separate household. Standing to the west of Ungang Historic House, it is laid out in the straight, ㅡ-shaped form characteristic of Sinji village. Entering through the gate building, the sarangchae, or men's quarters, comes into view directly ahead, with a door to its left connecting to the anchae, the women's quarters. Further in, the heotganchae, a storage building, and the anchae are kept separate and arranged in an L, or ㄴ, shape. The way the beams are supported in the daecheong, the main wooden-floored hall, of the sarangchae is unusual, and a taegeuk, or yin-yang, symbol is painted at the ends of the beams held there.
