This house was built in 1899, the third year of the Gwangmu era, by Bak Gi-muk (1830–1911), younger brother of Bak Si-muk (pen name Ungang), while he was serving as magistrate of Hapcheon County. After Bak Gi-muk's death it passed to a grandson of Bak Si-muk, and later to his nephew Bak Jae-su (1894–1973). The house is known as "Do Il Historic House" after Bak Jae-su's courtesy name (ja), Do Il. Entering through the main gate, the sarangchae (men's quarters) stands to the right, with a central inner gate beyond it. Through the inner gate the anchae (women's quarters) faces the visitor directly, flanked on either side by a storage building and a detached annex. Each building is a single straight range, and together, arranged around a central courtyard, they form an overall square plan — a structure typical of houses built on the lowland plains of the Yeongnam region.
