Hahoe House in Daesan-ri, Seongju

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHahoe House in Daesan-ri, Seongju, stands facing southwest at the centre of Hangae Village, a traditional village. Although its exact date of construction and history are unknown, it is thought to date from the 1630s, in the late Joseon period. The house's name derives from the fact that the mother of its present owner married into the family from Hahoe in Andong. The house is arranged around a U-shaped (ㄷ-shaped) anchae (main women's quarters), with a single-row jungmunchae (middle gate quarters) in front forming an overall open ㅁ-shaped (rectangular) layout, while a separate sarangchae (men's quarters) stands to the right of the jeongchim (main hall). The sarangchae and the jeongchim are divided by an earthen wall, clearly separating men's and women's spaces, with a small side gate connecting the two. Entry to the house is currently arranged so that one reaches both the sarang and jeongchim areas through a three-bay gate at the front right of the sarangchae, though this is said not to have been the original arrangement. To the left of the jungmunchae stands an independent storehouse (gwang), and the neat row of earthenware jars on the jangdokdae (sauce-jar terrace), enclosed by an earthen wall in the rear yard that connects to the kitchen and serves as a space for household chores, is particularly notable. The house is distinctive for the way it provides separate spaces for an extended family while maintaining a clear division between men's and women's quarters, yet still linking them together. Like the other houses of Hangae Village, it retains well the characteristics of a yangban house of the southern region, and although it has been partly altered, its original form has not been greatly damaged.
