This house is a traditional dwelling consisting of two buildings, an anchae (main women's quarters) and a sarangchae (men's quarters). According to the ink-written ridge-beam inscription in the sarangchae, it was built in 1852, the third year of King Cheoljong. The house takes its name, Geugwa Historic House, from 'Geugwa,' the pen name of Yi Ju-hui (1866–1946), who built the house. Yi Ju-hui was a filial son who, after his mother's death, wore white clothes and a white horsehair hat for three years in mourning for her. He was also a patriot who, lamenting the loss of national sovereignty, lived confined to a room spread with straw matting and did not go out in public. At the time of construction, the house's layout had a gobangchae (storage quarters) to the east of the inner courtyard, which together with the sarangchae formed an overall ㄷ-shaped (U-shaped) plan; today, however, the gobangchae has been demolished, leaving only the single-row sarangchae and anchae, giving an open layout in the form of the character 二 (two parallel strokes). Although the sarangchae has a thatched roof, its floor plan is the same as that of a tile-roofed house, and the anchae is in no way inferior to that of a yangban (scholar-official) house. In particular, the rear eastern pillars of the anchae stand on a large bedrock outcrop, and the elegantly carved lattice of the kitchen's high window and the curved timber used along the underside of the loft all convey the natural beauty characteristic of a traditional Korean house (hanok).
