This is one of the houses built by descendants in Maewon Village, where the mid-Joseon civil official Yi Yun-u, pen name Seokdam (1569–1634), and his son Yi Do-jang, pen name Nakchon (1603–1644), had settled. The jeongchim, the main hall of the anchae (main women's quarters), was built by Yi Dong-yu (1768–1836) in 1788, the 12th year of King Jeongjo, and the sarangchae (men's quarters) was built in 1816, the 16th year of King Sunjo. It later came to be called Haeeun Historic House after the pen name of Yi Dong-yu's descendant, Yi Cheol-yeon (1851–1905). Passing through the daemunchae (gate quarters), one finds the sarangchae, the storehouse (gotganchae) and the jeongchim arranged in a ㄷ-shaped (U-shaped) layout, and to the right of the jeongchim a separate ancestral shrine is enclosed by its own wall. The jeongchim measures six and a half bays across the front and one and a half bays in depth, with a gabled roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). The sarangchae measures seven bays across the front and one and a half bays in depth, and the shrine measures three bays by three bays. The storehouse measures six bays across the front and one bay in depth, and the gate quarters measure three bays across the front and one bay in depth; the roofs of all the buildings are gabled. Among the houses of Maewon Village, this house is notable for having been built relatively early, in the late 18th century, and for its well-proportioned scale, making it a good example of the characteristics of its period and region.
