Sa Goe-dang Historic House in Sanggeumgok-ri, Yecheon
예천 상금곡리 사괴당고택 · 醴泉 上金谷里 四槐堂 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSanggeumgok-ri is a village inhabited by members of the Wonju Byeon clan and the Hamyang Park clan. This house is said to have been founded by Sa Goe-dang Eung-nyeong (1518–1586), great-grandson of Byeon Hui-ri (1435–1505), who was the first of the Cheomchu-gong branch of the clan to settle in this village. The building is laid out in an open ㅁ-shape, with the jeongchim (main hall) and its two wings forming a ㄷ-shape, a single-row gatehouse (mungan-chae) standing in front, and a two-storey daemunchae (gate quarters) to the east of the right wing. The arrangement of the house gives a clear division by generation across the jeongchim and the right wing, and the storage spaces are particularly well organised. The joinery techniques and the craftsmanship of the doors and windows also show a refined style. Judging from the building techniques used, the house is thought to have been built in the early to mid-18th century, and it is a valuable example for tracing the development of houses in the late Joseon period.
