Yaongjeong Pavilion, Bonghwa
봉화 야옹정 · 奉化 野翁亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krYaong Jeon Eung-bang (1491–1554) built this pavilion during the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon (r. 1567–1608), as a place for teaching and discussing moral philosophy and scholarship. Jeon Eung-bang passed the jinsa examination (a preliminary state civil examination) under King Jungjong, but in keeping with the dying wish of his grandfather, Hyugye Jeon Hui-cheol, who had himself witnessed the ugliness of the usurpation of the throne under King Danjong, he gave up any ambition for official office. He built Yaongjeong Pavilion in this place of fine scenery and devoted himself here to cultivating moral philosophy and scholarship, often meeting with Toegye Yi Hwang to discuss and debate Confucian learning. The building measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' (八) when viewed from the side. The signboard bears an inscription written by Toegye Yi Hwang himself.
