Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the house where Seongam Gwon Cheol-yeon (1874–1951) lived; it was built around 1880 by his father, who had lived in the nearby village of Ungok across the way. In 1880, the 17th year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon, Gwon Cheol-yeon passed the samasi examination (a licentiate examination) and became a saengwon, and it is said that literary figures and patriotic activists often came to visit him. The building faces east with Manseongbong Peak behind it. Passing through the sotdaemun, a gate with a raised central bay, at the centre of the straight (il-shaped) servants' quarters, one enters a spacious outer courtyard. To the left is a three-bay seodang (village school) courtyard, and opposite the servants' quarters stands the square (ㅁ-shaped) main house. The main house measures seven bays across the front and eight bays along the side, and earthen walls built partway along each side divide the space into inner and outer courtyards.
