This is a traditional house on Ulleungdo Island. The original building was dismantled and rebuilt in 1984 using its own timber. A gwitteuljip, also called a tumakjip, is a log house whose walls are built up from logs notched and interlocked in a well-frame pattern, then roofed over with wood shingles, oak bark, or birch bark. It is a four-bay, single-range house with rooms arranged on either side of a central kitchen. The kitchen floor was set lower than the raised platform along the eaves, with steps connecting the two levels. This platform, the space between the room walls and the outer wall beneath the eaves, was enclosed all around with silver grass and widened at the front for ease of movement. The roof and outer walls were likewise covered with silver grass.
