Sinheon Hall Old House, Jincheon
진천 신헌 고가 · 鎭川 申櫶 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the house where Sin Heon (1810–1884), a military official and diplomat of the late Joseon period, lived. Sin Heon held a range of important official posts and played a key role in the opening of Joseon's ports, concluding the Treaty of Ganghwa Island and the Korea–United States Treaty of Amity and Commerce, among others. The house was built around 1850 by Sin Heon in the form of a traditional hanok. When first built it included a sarangchae (men's quarters), a haengnangchae (servants' quarters) and an anchae (women's quarters), but today only the anchae and gwangchae remain. The anchae stands on a two-tier stone platform and has an L-shaped floor plan: the right side has a gable roof shaped like the Chinese character for person (人) when seen from the side, while the left side has a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the figure eight (八) when seen from the side. The gwangchae is an auxiliary building used to store grain and other household goods.
