This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, where a spirit tablet is enshrined and memorial rites are held in honour of the virtue of Guhye Seo Chim. Seo Chim lived through the upheaval of the transition from Goryeo to Joseon, withdrawing to his home village and devoting himself to scholarship. Guam Seowon was built in 1665, the sixth year of King Hyeonjong, and was demolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under the Prince Regent's order to abolish seowon, before being rebuilt by Confucian scholars in 1924. It stands facing north-east at the foot of a hill to the right of the sports ground of Sinmyeong Girls' High School. Passing through Gyeongangmun Gate, a pavilion housing a memorial stele stands to the right, with a lecture hall opposite. Sunghyeonsa stands about 3 m behind the lecture hall. The shrine building measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hipped-and-gabled roof shaped like the character 八 when viewed from the side. Guamseowonsunghyeonsa stands within the largest seowon in the city of Daegu, and is relatively well preserved.
