Gangneung Gwibu
강릉귀부 · 江陵龜趺

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the base stone of a stele, carved in the shape of a turtle, standing in the front yard of the Gangneung Ojukheon House Municipal Museum. Carved from a single stone together with its base plate, the turtle has a short neck, and its face lies almost level with its back. The face is finely carved with eyes, nose, mouth, ears and whisker-like ridges, and beneath the chin is carved an inverted-triangular beard. The front feet, each with four toes, protrude below the front edge of the shell; the rear feet, now broken, are drawn in as if crouching, and the tail curls round to the right. The shell is covered all over with a hexagonal pattern, and at its centre is a square socket for holding the stone monument. It was found buried in the ground in 1965 during road-widening work, and was kept at the Gangneung Office of Education before being moved to its present site for preservation in 1992.
