This temple was founded in 876, the second year of King Heongang of Silla, by the monk Doseon; it is said to be called Donggosa because it lies to the east of Jeonju. Donggosa was burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and was rebuilt in 1844, the tenth year of King Heonjong of Joseon, by the monk Heoju; it was later given its present appearance when the monk Yeongdam rebuilt the Daeungjeon Hall and other buildings in 1946. It is also said that the second prince of King Gyeongsun of Silla became a monk named Beomgong and came here to cultivate the Buddhist path and console himself for the sorrow of his lost kingdom.
