This is a seowon, a Confucian academy, built to honour the memory of An Hyang. An Hyang (1243–1306) was a renowned scholar of the Goryeo period whose pen name was Hoeheon. He passed the civil service examination in the first year of King Wonjong of Goryeo (1260), and in the twelfth year of King Chungnyeol (1286) he introduced Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism, becoming Korea's first Neo-Confucian scholar. Yeondong Lidded Box Hoseowon Confucian Academy was built in 1716, the forty-second year of King Sukjong of Joseon, but was closed under Emperor Gojong (r. 1863–1907) by the order of Heungseon Daewongun to abolish Confucian academies, before being rebuilt in 1927. The shrine enshrines the spirit tablet and portrait of An Hyang, pen name Hoeheon, and memorial rites are held there every year on the twelfth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar.
