Dosanseowon Confucian Academy was built to commemorate Gwon Deuk-gi (pen name Manhoe) and his son Gwon Si (pen name Tanong). Gwon Deuk-gi passed the civil service examination at the age of 41 and served as Jwarang of the Ministry of Rites, but when the political situation grew turbulent he is said to have given up his post to study Neo-Confucian philosophy. Gwon Si was likewise an outstanding scholar and was appointed Tutor to the Grand Prince and Left Deputy Mayor of Hanseong, but he too abandoned office and devoted himself to scholarship here, his hometown. The academy was built in 1693, the 19th year of King Sukjong of Joseon, through the joint efforts of local Confucian scholars, and in 1711, the 37th year of King Sukjong, it received a royal name plaque and became a sa-aek seowon, an academy formally recognised by the throne. It is said to have comprised a shrine of 3 kan (kan being a traditional unit for the bay between pillars of a building), a shrine gate of 3 kan, a lecture hall of 4 kan, a west dormitory of 3 kan, a south dormitory of 4 kan and a ritual preparation hall of 3 kan, 23 kan in all, but it was torn down under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies. An altar was later built in 1921 and memorial rites held there, and the academy was restored twice, in 1968 and 1973, by the Andong Gwon clan. The name 'Dosan' was given because the scholars stayed here and devoted themselves to the study of Neo-Confucian philosophy.
