This is the head house of a branch of the Hakseong Yi clan, built by Yi Ui-chang, the 11th-generation descendant of the clan's founding ancestor Yi Ye. During the reign of Emperor Gojong, Yi Ui-chang's great-grandson Yi Jang-chan rebuilt it, and around 1934 it was again completely rebuilt; it has since undergone several further repairs to reach its present form. Standing in the middle of Seokcheon Village, the house comprises a gatehouse, a sarangchae (men's quarters), a storehouse, a detached annex, an anchae (women's quarters) and a shrine housing the ancestral tablets. The gatehouse is attached to the main gate, and the sarangchae is modest in scale, with a hipped-and-gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 八 ('eight') when viewed from the side. The clear separation of living spaces and the presence of an independent shrine show the character of an upper-class clan head house of the Joseon period.
