This 1.78 m stone Buddha statue originally stood in Okcheon-dong, Gangneung, and was moved to the Ojukheon Municipal Museum in 1992. The pedestal and the body were carved from different stones, and the head and torso, which had been broken into two pieces, have been repaired. The head is covered with small snail-shell-shaped curls, and the topknot-shaped knot of hair on the crown has worn away so badly that no trace of it remains. The face is oval with a long nose, narrow slanting eyes, and a mouth rendered with relatively full volume. The robe covers both shoulders, its folds treated in a flat, stylised manner, and three strands of an undergarment hem are shown across the chest. The right hand is raised with the palm turned outward, while the right hand points downward but is damaged. The serene facial expression recalls the faces of Silla Buddhist statues, but the excessively narrow shoulders, the flat rendering of the robe folds and the style of the lotus-patterned pedestal suggest that the statue was in fact made in the mid-Goryeo period.
