Haksoam Hermitage
학소암 · 鶴巢庵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis hermitage was founded in 1786, the 10th year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, by the monk Gwanghye, and its grounds contain Jaeumjeon Hall (慈蔭殿) and Geungnakjeon Hall. Jaeumjeon Hall, rebuilt in the mid-19th century, enshrines a wooden Buddha image at its centre flanked by stone bodhisattva images on either side, and houses six Buddhist paintings. The recently built Geungnakjeon Hall enshrines a wooden image of Amitabha Buddha, the buddha of the Western Paradise. The hermitage sits snugly on the western foot of Godeoksan Mountain, and its setting, reminiscent of a crane's nest, appears to be the origin of the name Haksoam, meaning "Crane's Nest Hermitage".
